Profile

I'm Zhizhao Liu, currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science and Technology at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT). I received my Bachelor's degree from Northeastern University.

My research interests primarily lie in Natural Language Processing, with a special focus on Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), text generation, and hallucination mitigation. I combine insights from my cross-disciplinary background in mechanical engineering and computational mathematics to approach problems from unique angles.

Core Finding: We reveal a counter-intuitive phenomenon where rerankers, while improving ground-truth recall, significantly increase the proportion of "Harmful Documents"—misleading content sharing superficial shortcuts (like high-frequency entities) with the query.

Method: We propose a risk-aware reranking method utilizing Information Gain. By balancing the potential benefit against the risk of retrieved documents (akin to hard negative mining), our approach effectively suppresses harmful noise while maintaining performance.
